Beach Shots on an Infrared Converted Canon D60

My wife and I headed to Long Beach Island, New Jersey on Christmas Eve for a family dinner and, with the unexpected 50 degree temperatures, some beach combing. I've had this camera for about 2 years since picking it up for a song on eBay. I use for a handful of shots during weddings, and have posted some of them here on the blog, but it has spent the majority of our relationship in the camera bag. Here's a couple shots from the trip, the infrared is a real blast to shoot landscape with, though the 6mp resolution puts oversize prints out of reach, does Genuine Fractals still exist?

As much as I absolutely love Oregon, there are some big changes coming to us here. There's a great opportunity to relocate to the Philadelphia area via the company I work for and I can't say no. We'll be hitting the road in a pickup this Thanksgiving, aiming to be in Phoenixville, PA by the end of the weekend. I'll be referring all my NW wedding inquiries to fellow photographer, Robert Martin, as I will be gearing up to shoot in the SE PA Area for the coming years. Since my relocation is inevitable, Jenna and I have been trying to get in as much camping, outings, hiking and Oregon map covering as possible, and with a waning summer on our hands, we've been out every weekend. I packed my Canon A2e film body for our trip to the Central Oregon Coast, where we camped at Cape Lookout. If you're looking for an outdoor rustic coastal place to get married, Absolutely check this location out. Here's some pix, all shot with a roll of Velvia 100F Slide Film thats been kicking in a drawer for 4 years and my 20mm. Fun stull, I rarely ever cross process but figured, why not, and I can get my negatives in a day. Here's my favorites from the roll, thanks for looking, and Happy Fall!

Amy & Mark had a stellar wedding this past August. On the sweaty east slope of Mt. Hood, south of Hood River, we met up at the Mt Hood B&B for a truly awesome day. Making it ever more interesting, long time colleague& amp; friend Robert Martin and I FINALLY got to shoot together! Robbie and I have been working together on wedding projects and other ventures since around 2005 but due to some interesting scheduling, and perhaps fate, we ended up shooting Mark & Amy's wedding in tandem.

Another huge shout out to Vibrant Table for providing AMAZING on site grilling and table service with their usual top notch flavors and combinations. The couple also booked a 6 piece jazz band as entertainment for the evening, and in case you're wondering, listening to stellar live music on a horse farm/orchard as the sun sets on a 90 degree day and stars fill the sky is about as good as Oregon gets. Thanks for making us part of it! Here's some of our favorite pix from the day.

1 Hour Wedding

Shot a marathon hour wedding last weekend in Portland, Oregon. Amazingly beautiful and super sweet couple Dennis and Marie met me at the summit of Mt. Tabor in S.E. Portland, for an intimate ceremony with family and friends. We had a tight timeline, and after shooting some formals and the ceremony, walked about the park getting some fun couple shots. Dreamy: Carl Zeiss Tessar 50mm 2.8 Lens on a 7D

I recently picked up this fun screw mount lens for a sweet deal (25.00) on Craigslist. I've never owned such fabled optics, and honestly, never really cared about them so much. I have had some fun over the past years with old lenses adapted for the Canon EOS system though, and have shot through old Asahi's, Vivitars, Sonnagars and others, but honestly, this one is the sharpest.

As macro as this Tessar gets, full frame

It glows on the highlights however, as you can see in the videos second shot, it gets a little dreamy around the highlights, unlike the EF 50 1.4, which is my go to for most things, and is to be expected. 50 years of glass and coating development separates the two.

The throw of the lens however is the real winner, fluid and slow, easy to get nice focus pulls, at a reasonable rate without using a rail system. I'm planning on using this lens in an upcoming video shoot, fun stuff, on the cheap. Thanks for reading!

Mamiya RZ67

I've been itching to finish off a half shot roll that's been hanging out in my Mamiya RZ67 for a couple months, and got the chance last weekend. I bought this camera from a studio photographer here in Portland about 3 years ago, and it's never been shown the love/heavy usage it deserves. I have the basic kit lens the Sekor 110mm 2.8 and a couple backs. The lens is beautiful, and shallow as you could ask for, even af f4 on those huge 6x7 negs.

The camera really is a joy to shoot, and if film were affordable, and I were a rockstar like Jose Villa, I would probably roll with this bad boy at all of my portrait and engagement sessions. I just love the look. Here's a couple pix from the roll, and some great info on using one of these cameras. You can pick up one from eBay or KEH.com on the CHEAP, so if you want a serious professional portrait camera, and don't mind shooting roll film, these are great fun.

Here's a great video if you do pick up one of these cameras, unlike my other 120 cameras, Mamiya's always load with the paper on the outside, its odd, especially coming from assisting photographers that shot Hassleblad systems.

I recently ordered an intervalometer for my Canon 7D after watching some really cool videos from photographer Nick Campbell and former employer and great travel photographer Bob Krist. While waiting on this, and yes, still waiting, I found an app for the iphone that records interval stills and outputs at 720p, at 1.99 the ReelMoments app is satisfying the bug to shoot these a bit, and saving some serious clicks on the camera for goofing around with compositions and frame rates. Anyhow, here's one from yesterday, shot over 1.5 hours in the evening, no edits, right out of the phone.

There are some cool projects on the horizon, I'll be shooting some promotional shots for a Portland band here in the coming months, which should be great to work on, and I'm shooting 2 more movies this summer! Great SciFi stuff, really imaginative teams on both projects. Thanks for checking in and reading!

Yashicamat

One of my favorite cameras is the Yashicamat, they made TONS of them from the 60's to the 80's, and it's one of the least expensive real 120 cameras you can get your hands on. Mine is the standard, Yashicamat, not the fancy 124G (Which has light meter and a better lens) and I've had it for about 6 years. The light meter isn't really a problem with the Light Meter app for the iphone, which is pretty darn accurate from these, and some other tests with negative film. Here's some shots from last week, taken in the woods behind the house, just goofing off with a roll of expired Kodak CN400, which apparently isn't being made anymore, it was replaced with new BW400, and if its anything like the Ektar 100 released around the same time, I'll be happy to order some. I finally got some free time this month to test out the new-to-me Canon 7D. I headed over to Astoria, Oregon, one of my favorite places in the state to shoot photos. Wow, so it's been a rather eventful month since posting. I got hired full time for e-commerce software company Monsoon Inc. in client services! It was a much needed move in life and will be great working around new and creative people. That said, you can still catch me shooting weddings around this summer with SJ Harmon Photography. Steelhead Fishing

Had another non-successful Steelhead Fishing trip yesterday, and broke out the Canon A2E Film Camera, 50mm and 20mm. Good friend Mike and I hit Elk Creek, then the Wilson River in North Western Oregon for about 1000 casts and no hits. Here's some pix from the trip, shot with Fuji 400H, scanned by the crappy scanner at Walgreens. I STILL have not set up my work station since the move, so I'm still working from my work laptop, and no lightroom...thank Google for Picasa otherwise there would be no editing and little organization. Fun Phone App

I've been really digging my iphone4, by the way, and it's speediness at running the instagram application. Its really fun, if you've not used it before, you can sync it to your blog (which I probably won't be doing personally,) Twitter or Facebook. There's a bunch of cool filters, and in conjunction with the small screen of a smartphone, your photos end up looking really, really cool. Check out my feed if you're interested, I add stuff daily! The biggest downside is that your feed on instagram isn't anywhere online, it resides within the application. SO, I'm justinhawthorne in that world. New Address & New Projects

Jenna, my wife and I recently moved to of all places, the outer westside of Portland near Bethany Village. We found a great house in the woods, on 2 acres. Its a small place, BUT with lots of outdoor living/expansion options. There is a big shed up in the woods that Jenna and her caprentry skills are turing into the new home of my photo studio / office. Here's some pix of Jenna in her contractor garb. Super excited to start working up here!

Wow, this year so far has been a trip...we've had more website problems than you can shake a stick at, and long days turned into long weekends and evenings at the office...I sincerely hope that is done with. Regardless, one of my good friends came out for a visit this month, and we were able to hit the rivers and ponds for some fly fishing. Great times all around, and a much welcomed break. Steve also launched his new pet project, istocksecrets.com, in attempt to quintuple his istockphoto income, which has been a bit inspiring to say the least. I'm going to roll with the program and start shooting stock, on a weekly basis. I've got some cool ideas, I think, and will post the results from this coming weekends shoot here. Week at the Coast

My wife and I recently returned home from our one year anniversary, which we spent at a little cottage in Rockaway Beach, on the Oregon Coast. We were able to get our hands on some stellar seafood, such as Kumomoto Oysters from The Old Oregon Smokehouse, a couple pounds of Steamers from Pacific Seafood and I was lucky enough to get 3 keeper dungeness crab on the Garibaldi Public Dock. Here's some mildly pornographic images of the cookoff that was our beach vacation.

Been getting all around Oregon lately! The past weekends, like most summers here have been booked up, and with the stellar weather (post heatwave, especially) and it's been almost perfect for me and my cameras. My infrared camera shows its colors this time of year, highlighting foliage and making some of my favorite images, here's a recent one from The Ainsworth House in Oregon City.

So, for the first time in probably 3 years I've purchased non-expired film. I usually get film from Freestyle, since they're west coast, and ground shipping takes 3 days vs. the better priced (by about .25c - 1.00 per roll depending on type) Adorama. I got 2 rolls of Kodak's new Ektar 100, which I'll shoot in my Canon A2E hopefully soon, and a pro pack of Fuji 160C 120 for my Mamiya AF. I've been jonzed even harder lately on film after keeping tabs on Jose Villa's Blog, it's great, check it out. Posting of shots to come, hopefully within a week.

Fall Colors & Mountain Adventures

I've finally been able to get out into the woods! Jenna and I went out to Nehalem Falls a couple weeks back for a little camping and fly fishing, which was stellar and this past weekend found me Coho fishing on the Sandy (unsuccessfully) and hiking in Mt. Hood National Forest. I think we stumbled across the filming set for the movie "Twilight" which is pretty funny and in a eerie, rural awesome place to film a horror flick.

I'm still working away on my travel essay for Long Beach Island, New Jersey. Following in the footsteps of one of my inspirations and former bosses, Bob Krist I shot all editorial style with slide film. It's coming out nicely, but man, it takes forever and a day to scan 8 rolls of mounted slides...

Summer Comes to a Close

It's been a long one, but my lunatic summer is coming to a close. What better way to celebrate than to hang out in the woods, right? My fiancee and I just got back from a nice weekend in Oregon's coastal range, fly fishing, hiking around, burning wood, playing rummikub, you know...normal stuff. But as the light dims on Sunday afternoon, it's back to business!
Steve and I shot a really nice wedding last week at Gray Gables in Milwaukee and shot FILM! in conjunction with our normal regiment of digital cameras. It was cool, fun and an inspiring throwback. We're going to attempt to include some of this fine art film work in all of our wedding output in the coming years and potentially offer a film only package! With the price of the cameras we once dreamed over dropping drastically, we've acquired a fine selection of 1980's-1990's pro cameras and lenses.
I'll be posting a travelogue of my down home, Jersey Shore trip here in a short bit. Since it was all shot with my EOS1 and slide film, I'm realizing the convenience of digital cameras (crouching behind 7 developed rolls of slides, towering over me on my desk, listening to my scanner hum the hours away)

And here's some shots from a wedding out in Scappoose, Oregon (about 25 minutes northwest of Portland) at the Scappoose Creek Inn my favorite new venue of the year.

Back In Action

It's been a while since I've had a minute to sit down and write! Where to begin...Well, the Bravo wedding event was great! It was really nice, number one, visiting that part of Oregon. The Warm Springs area is flat out beautiful. The rolling hills, Junipers and wild horses create a surreal landscape (probably my east coast upbringings speaking for themselves) The lodge is an amazing value, especially compared to the small 101 beach side motels we're accustomed to. I'm not much of a gambler, or a swimmer, but there was plenty of natural awesomeness to explore and photograph in the area. It was really nice hanging out with the other vendors and putting faces to the studio emails.

I've completely navigated all of my studio output to my parent studio, SJ Harmon Photography! I've been shooting with the studio for four + years to date, and after working within our system, I am confident I can offer much more competitive rates, products and customer satisfaction. Fear not, current clients. All of my services will still be available and in full swing for another year. We still use the albums I produce, but will also include albums from the beautiful Leather Craftsmen of New York & California. This company creates beautiful, leather bound coffee table books of your wedding.

Bravo Wedding Event, New Geeky Camera, Oh Yeah

Well, now that it's finally feeling like the summer, I find myself going to the desert for a Bravo wedding conference. It's in Warm Springs, Oregon on an Indian reservation, two places I've never been, but why not. I'm lucky enough to go with Jenna and have a little bit of free time to explore and take more photos. If you haven't had a chance to check out the Bravo Guide, you should, it's a great resource for planning your wedding, or if you are interested in any part of the industry. Their extremely helpful budgeting guide has helped many of the folks I've talked to.

In my endless, dorky quest for strange and old cameras, I've struck gold! I found a Minolta Hi-Matic 7s II at the local goodwill the other day. If you're interested in that critter, read about it here Oh, and yes, it's the black version.

I just finished documenting the cast clay artwork of Greg Boswell, a Portland Sculptor who's Costume from the movie Ajafea was featured in my blog a couple months ago. Regardless, his pieces are very interesting and will have a link posted here in the coming future.

New Albums In The Works, Busy Weekends Ahead

After a phenomenal Memorial Day Weekend up in Seattle, it's right back into wedding season for me. With ceremonies every weekend of the month, I should have plenty of photos and stories to include in the blog! Next weekend, I'll be lucky enough to do some photography at David Hill Winery (if you can get your hands on their Farmhouse Red((best 10 dollar Oregon Wine I've found)), you won't regret it!) They are located just outside of Forest Grove, Oregon and are a wonderful stop if you are headed to, or from the Oregon Coast
Other than that, I recently picked up a Canon EOS 1 film camera and can't wait to shoot some of my old slide & black and white film. Check back in soon, I'll be posting those shots!

I recently added some photos to my Flickr account of a trip out into the wilds of Mt. Hood National Forest, outside of Estacada" Oregon. It's really beautiful out there, a great spot for hiking and photography.Brendan and I went out for the day and hiked up the Roaring River and drove on some more than questionable roads, but ended up with some nice shots.

Busy Week, Continued...

Just made it home from a long day of shooting! Was fortunate enough to attend and document the 90th birthday of a prominent Oregonian up at the Portland City Grill this evening which was wonderful, considering the miserable, gray day we had compared to the rad sunset this evening.

In other news, I shot my friend Greg Boswell's costume, which he hand made for the independent film "Ajafea"

I had the opportunity to photograph Presidential Candidate Barack Obama yesterday! A little bird told me that he would be exiting the Benson Hotel around 9am. I think I was the only one there not taking pictures on a camera phone. Anyhow, for the approximately 45 seconds he was in between the hotel and the tour bus, I snapped off some Photos
